It may also be used in hyperthyroidism if beta blockers cannot be used. It is taken by mouth or injection into a vein. When given by injections effects typically begin within a few minutes and last a few hours.

It has been found to be particularly useful in heart failure together with isosorbide dinitrate in people of African descent. It is given by mouth or by injection into a vein. Procainamide is also known to induce a voltage-dependent open channel block on the batrachotoxin (BTX)-activated sodium channels in cardiomyocytes.
